FOOD WASTE RECYCLING IN DAREBIN
August, 2018
Food Waste Recycling in Darebin: Project
A six month food waste recycling trial involving residents in the Kingsbury area has been completed Darebin Council.
The trial, between December 2017 and June 2018, involved 1024 Kingsbury households putting food waste scraps into their green bins.
Darebin council has a history of being concerned with the environment and the trial shows their desire to try and make a difference.
Some members of the community said it has taken too long for such a scheme to be trialed.
Darebin Community Member, Ms Sasha Sweatman, is happy that the trial has taken place as it leads to a better use of household food waste.
Ms Sweatman said the council ‘could have trailed and had the scheme in place many years ago’.
Darebin Deputy Mayor, Councilor Lina Messina said ‘maybe [previous councilors] didn’t think it was a priority’ and didn’t put money in the budget for it.
But Cr Messina and the current elected council of Darebin said the scheme was important for creating a better future.
Cr Messina said ‘We need to think about the future of generations, not just this’.
A final report on the findings of the trial is expected in September.
