Taking Control: Work

Allegra De Leucio, like most artists, has been creating art since she was very young, around 3 to be exact. As both her parents are gifted musicians, she has always been surrounded by creativity.

Whilst she did take a bit of a break during High School to focus on music, after being diagnosed with a neurological chronic illness, she found her way back.

I sat down and had a chat to the emerging artist.

Your art is quite complex, could you take me through the process of making one of your pieces.

It really depends on what work I’m making. So for an abstract canvas painting I would begin with washes of colour and watercolour layers. I also water down the pigment with a spray bottle then allowing it to dry before painting more layers. Usually my digital compositions began with one of my abstract canvases. I take photos of the canvases as well as environmental textures and start editing them together into one. Sometimes I take photographs of figures or people and also layer them with the abstract paintings and textures.

You tend to use the female form as a focus of your art, why is this?

I really started working on the female form when I became unwell. I found it was a really good way to express myself through the body. Being someone who is in pain, being able to show the body and abstraction coming out of it, really reflects the different emotions and strengthens them. Also as a woman, I think it is inspiring to show off the female form. It can bring confidence to other women and tells them not to hide. I think there’s a lot of negative stigma attached to nudity and I’m trying to make it beautiful.

Do you think there is enough female representation in the art industry?

I definitely don’t think there is enough. Especially in galleries, they are very male based and a lot of male artists seem to get more exposure. I hope it will change and I think it is. I think it is in all areas of life.

To my understanding you haven’t done many exhibitions, yet you’re posting your art on Instagram every day. How does Social Media differ from working with a gallery? Do you prefer it?

Honestly exhibiting in galleries is very expensive and is a loss to the artist. Most artist don’t earn a lot of money and being up for a thousand plus dollars to exhibit, and on top of that the gallery also takes a cut, like 50%, 30%, of the paintings they sell. So usually it’s not a very good deal for the artist to exhibit in galleries, which is such a shame. But I think the movement of posting art online has really become a huge thing because it’s free and you can reach a much wider audience. I have followers from all over the world which I would never have had from just exhibiting in Melbourne. So that’s really cool and I think I really prefer the online presentation as I have full control and galleries aren’t running me.

You’ve done a fair few commissions, how does this differ from your other work? Do you like it more/less?

Commissions differ a lot from other works in the sense that someone is hiring you to create something of their liking. So they might give me a colour palette, some photos and ideas and I have to interpret that in my own way. Which can be really amazing for inspiration but also can be really hard because obviously what the client sees is different to what you see. However it is my interpretation, that’s just how commissions work. Definitely I love working on commissions as sometimes they give me new ideas. One time someone asked me to do a floral painting and I created a really nice floral abstraction and I just kept creating them because I was really inspired.

And lastly, what are you currently working on?

I am currently working on a series of the female form which is all about me being in pain, being in a body which is painful and trying to express that in a really beautiful and therapeutic manor which any one can look at and relate to.
